They have made that accusation in the past but the information from the Economist you're referencing is more current. Getting back to your original point...I'm reminded of the speech Obama gave when he lectured Europeans about Turkey. The Europeans were right to say, "excuse me but the last time I checked you were the President of the United States and not the President of the EU." I thought that was inappropriate. If Van Rompuy were to come over here and lecture us about our foreign policy, it would not be well received.

Having lived in Turkey, I found that there are a lot of things about the culture and political system that seem a bit paradoxical. My friend from Turkey spoke to me by phone last Friday and he was actually embarrassed by all of bans that have increased significantly since the time I was there. He told me you can't even view YouTube on a proxy server anymore. He doesn't like the idea of being lumped together with Iran & China when it comes to the government restricting the free flow of information. I found that the more educated urban youth support stronger ties with Europe but there is a large population in Turkey who are still stuck in the Middle Ages.

Has America accused China of being a currency manipulator? I thought that was quite a touchy issue and deliberately postponed by the US Treasury Department. I thought the Economist mentioned it as one of the potential reasons why China was more willing to cooperate on the Iran-issue, too.

I agree that some trends in Turkey are against deeply held beliefs by both you and me, but the European Union - as a project - aims at bolstering exactly those ideas, so it would be odd to accept them into a collective body if it doesn't meet desired standards. Sure, I would be willing to get them on board, but only when strict rules and goals are set for the near future and because I think it'd be easier to positively influence Turkey when they are a part of us - not them.

We have accused China of being a currency manipulator. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have made that accusation but that's not the point of your article. Turkey has some obstacles to overcome. They seem to be going backwards what with banning Google and You Tube. Freedom of the press is one of our core values but you are correct sir. Americans have no business butting into European politics.
